CLEANING, DISINFECTING & SANITIZING: understanding the differences!

What is the difference between cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing? Some people think that disinfecting is the same thing as sanitizing or your everyday cleaning methods – but they are actually very different!

  • CLEANING is the physical process of removing germs, dirt, viruses and bacteria, typically using warm water and soap. While it does not necessarily kill germs, by removing these unwanted particles from surfaces and objects (including hands) you lower the risk of spreading disease and infection.
  • DISINFECTING uses chemicals to kill germs and bacteria. While it does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or REMOVE germs, it kills KILLS unwanted germs and bacteria and can lower the risk of spreading disease and infection.
  • SANITIZING is the process of removing and lowering the spacial spread of germs and bacteria to a safer level that is approved and judged by health standards.
